Safehaven catamaran for Saudi Arabia

Mon, 09 November 2015

Irish specialist boatbuilder Safehaven Marine in County Cork has received an order from King Abdullah Port in Saudi Arabia for a Wildcat 53 catamaran designed for hydrographic survey, ocean research and general harbour duties.

Aft deck of the 16m vessel is being specially developed for hydrographic operations with a large moonpool fitted with a hydraulically-operated multibeam deployment system capable of raising and lowering transducers and equipment weighing up to 300kg to below keel level.

The main cabin is to incorporate a general hydrographic work area comprising a large U-shaped worktop with computer racking below together with space for multiple computer screens. Multibeam survey equipment still to be specified will include either a Reson SeaBat 7125 unit or a Kongsberg GeoSwath Plus system.

With displacement survey speeds of 8-9 knots over an operational range of 1,400 nm and accommodation for 15 crew and personnel, the new vessel is scheduled for delivery next May. According to Safehaven managing director Frank Kowalski, it follows earlier delivery of a comparable Wildcat 53 craft to another Middle East customer, the Kuwait Institute of Scientific Research (KISR). Specifically designed to maintain optimum sea-keeping conditions in rough weathers, it is presently being used for hydrographic research and survey operations in waters off the coast of Kuwait and its regions.
