Transforming Plymouth’s South Yard

Mon, 06 July 2015

Rare facilities and a collaborative business environment will make Plymouth’s South Yard the UK’s premier location for marine innovation….

South Yard is a 7.5ha area of Devonport Dockyard Naval Base that is being opened up for commercial use in a phased transfer to Plymouth City Council (PCC) over 3 years. This prime waterfront location is adjacent to both Babcock Marine and Princess Yachts and within easy access of international marine science leaders - Plymouth University, Plymouth Marine Laboratories and the Marine Biological Association.

The vision for the site is to develop a Marine Industries Production Campus (MIPC) that brings together research, innovation, production and deployment in the marine sector. South Yard will become the hub for a South West MIPC linking Falmouth, Appledore, Torbay and other smaller ports and clusters across the region, enhancing local supply chains and supporting growth and R&D in marine businesses.

The first phase was transferred in April this year with the third phase waterfront area becoming available in April 2017. The waterside area has deep water access to the open sea and includes three docks ranging from 164m to 84m long and 20m to 29m wide, all with potential to be reinstated as dry docks.

PCC is currently planning the development of the site and talking to businesses interested in locating there. If you would like more information please see the web page below, or contact the Economy, Enterprise and Employment team on 01752 307395 or email [email protected].
